Large Scale Project Signage

For detailed information about our Wayfinding guidelines, please visit the Visual Identity Portal, or click the links below.

  • Questions or concerns?
  • [Name], Project Manager — this fosters transparency, accountability and trust.
  • [Tel No] — Project Manager’s direct number or generic departmental/ divisional number.
  • [email protected] — we suggest a generic divisional email in the event of an absence or staffing changes.

Signage Elements

  • Title
  • Use of white space
  • Use of photos is preferred. Renderings
  • and maps can be used if no photos of the project are available.
  • Estimated completion badge (if applicable)
  • Description
  • Optional: Use of shapes as frames to incorporate additional imagery (see Glen Park example).

Colour Use

  • When the purpose of the sign is public information/notification regarding a park, we use our City Green. (See Eagle Ridge Park Playground Replacement example).‍
  • When the purpose is public information/notification regarding a capital project, we use our City Blue. (See Lougheed Highway Improvements example).‍
  • When the sign is for public engagement rather than public notice, secondary colours can be used to evoke fun and engagement. (See Glen Park and Nelson Street examples).

Interior Facility Signage

  • The accent colour should be City Green or City Blue. If the specific facility has special requirements, other colours may be approved by the Visual Communications Supervisor.
  • Sign shape: Square or rectangular.
  • Square corners, not rounded.
  • Size is dependent on facility need
  • Font: The Sans.
  • Title Case
  • Braille must be included on signs.
  • Room numbers should follow the City’s plan for room naming, not architectural drawings
    • E.g. “Meeting Room 1”, even though the architectural drawing may have referred to it as Room 1.1

Standardized Room Signage

Naming Conventions & Icon Use

The City has standardized commonly found room and amenity names to ensure consistency across all facilities.

The City only applies icons to signage for spaces that have a universal public function: washrooms, change rooms and showers. Gender-neutral/universal facilities include functional icons (shower or toilet) – and the accessible wheelchair icon when applicable.

Men’s and Women’s facilities include the gendered icon and functional icon.

These icons are standardized and used across all Civic facilities.

The approved, standardized names are:

With Icons:

  • Washroom (includes Men’s/Women’s)
  • Universal Washroom
  • Change Room (includes Men’s/Women’s)
  • Shower

Without Icons:

  • Multi-Purpose Room
  • Custodial Supplies
  • Concession
  • Office
  • Storage
  • Meeting Room
  • Staff Room
  • Studio

To ensure consistency across all Civic facilities, contact the Visual Communications Supervisor if your project requires icon development.

Exterior Facility Signage

Facility Signage

The only icons that are to be included on facility signage are shown to the right.

  • Title Case
  • Font: TheSans
  • Accessibility consideration: Contrasts with the background to ensure best visibility and legibility.
  • Must include the City’s logo – placement is always under the facility name, and either right justified or centered depending on the length of the facility name/installation logistics.
  • Examples: Glen Pine, Dogwood, Town Centre Park Community Centre

Facility Decals

The Standard

  • Title Case
  • Font: TheSans
  • Colour:
    • White (when installed on glass).
    • Black or white when installed on a solid surface – colour selection based on what has the highest contrast.
    • Interior glass doors or windows should have the decal installed on the on the outside of the glass for maximum visibility.
    • Exterior glass doors or windows should have the decal installed on the inside of the glass to protect against vandalism.

Icons on Decals

Icons should come from our standardized collection – if new icons are required, the communications team must get involved to design a new standard icon.

Standardized Bylaw & Conduct Signs

Regulatory Signage

The City has standardized bylaw and regulatory signage to ensure clear and consistent messaging across all Civic facilities and amenities.

If new facility signage is required, please consult the Visual Communications Supervisor to ensure consistency across all civic facilities.
